Halal Milk for babies

Few months ago some muslim women asked me about halal baby milk. A japanese mulim woman helped us to get more information about the baby milk prouced in Japan.

Unfortunately, the only confirmed halal milk for babies we know is "Chirumiru" of Morinaga: from (9months to 3 years)(http://www.hagukumi.ne.jp /products/chirumiru/chirumiru .shtml)

The japanese sister, asked the maker Morinaga about "HAGUKUMI" suitable for newborn until 9 months, this is Morinaga answer:
"Lecithin is from soy bean, but unfortunately, Hagukumi contains enzyme from pork (or lard)."

The milk of Meiji is Haram (confirmed form ingredients).

All the other brands could not confirm if their products are halal. The japanese sister has asked both of Bean Stalk Snow (group comapny of Yukijirushi) and Wakoudou (group company of Asahi Beer) about their baby milk, unfortunately, their replies were not satisfactory.

Both of them said that as ingredients, haram materials are not included, but they do not have total control on the manufacturing process of their suppliers of ingredients. Enzyme or other ingredients may have been produced or extracted utilizing the material derived from pig.
Therefore they cannot guarantee if their products are halal and they request consumers who have religious restrictions shall not use their products.

If you want to use the baby milk for a baby from 0 month until 9 months and to be sure that the milk is confirmed Halal, I think the only choice you have is the soy milk baby formula, I do not know the brand names but I think it is easy to find it in the store. But, I have been told that soy milk is not good for baby health if used for long time.

I do not know if it is possible to import baby milk from Islamic countries but I think the muslim community here in Japan should consider this option since the only halal baby milk we know is "CHIRUMIRU" of Morinaga and it is only suitable for babies above 9 months.

I don't understand why do Japanese give milk that contains enzyme from pork to their tiny creature? What is the point of that?

Hi Fadoua
For them, it does not matter from where they get the ingredients, pork or anything else is the same for them.

soymilk only choice? import halal formula? listen to ourselves! is any1 going 2 suggest breastfeeding? Allah says VERY CLEARLY in surah Talaq: '...and if ye find yourselves in difficulty, ask another woman to suckle the child on the father's behalf.' dear sisters in japan. Allah has made life so easy for us women. either brstfeed your children or hand them over to some1 to wetnurse. if we try to outsmart the divine laws- it will catch up with us.

It is difficult in Japan to find someone to breastfeed your baby, but thanks for sharing your ideas with us.

That is not her ideas. It is what Allah has ordained us in the Quran

salam,
I have a 3 months old baby, next year we are going to send him to hoikuen because both of us will start our new semester in campus. we plan to give breast feeding at least until he's reaching 6 months through frozen breast milk, but unfortunately, the hoikuen refused to use breast milk (the frozen one). so, what do you think we should do? since almost all of formula milk for newborn until 9 months are haram (because some contains lard, or taurin)... do you have suggestion about what should we do?
thanks

How about asking the hoikuen if they accept to give him baby soy milk, this one is halal, may be they will accept.
One of my friends, she went every day around lunch time to the hoikuen to breastfeed her baby, of course the hoikuen gave her permission. So, I do not know if this option is possible for you.

I know it is difficult for you, I hope you can find a solution.

I checked the ingredients through hospital (Tokyo Ladies Hospital) so that it would give more reliability rather than direct inquiry to the manufacturer. According to hospital, all the manufacturers use pork to some extent. However, it is possible to use Meiji Elemental Formula which is prepared for infants with allergy. These are prepared manually, and made sure to exclude animal proteins and enzymes. Only downside is this milk is three times expensive than normal formula milk. For short time solution you can use this.

Baby formula "Chirumiru" (チルミル by Morinaga) have changed their ingredient recently. They have included Haram Pork ingredient in their renewal/new version. I called to their company and they confirmed.

Goats milk is closest to mothers milk nutrinionally. If they have it in Japan do they also contain pork enzyme?

In Japan, gelatine is derived from pork fat mostly. so it should be haram.

I think, there is no problem to eat foods containing pork fat emulsifier, since the emulsifier is molecular level and if it is even pork fat, that doesn't represent it as it broken down to molecular levels.
An emulsifier is a molecule with one oil-friendly and one water-friendly end. Plant source emulsifier is common, but animal source is also used. common emulsifiers are:
Egg Yolk emulsifying agent lecithin
Honey
Mustard
Soy lecithin
CSL Calcium Stearoyl Di Laciate
PolyGlycerol Ester (PGE)
Sorbitan Ester (SOE)
PG Ester (PGME)
Sugar Ester (SE)
Monoglyceride (MG)
Acetylated Monoglyceride (AMG)
Lactylated Monoglyceride (LMG)
Foods that con't be made without an emulsifier:
Biscuits
Extruded snacks
Cakes
Soft Drinks
Toffees
Frozen Desserts
Bread
Margarine
Coffee Whitener
Caramels
Ice-cream
Salad dresses
Dairy products (milk, chess, cream etc)
Chocolates etc

so that, you can't survive in real world without emulsifiers, so called Nyūkazai hhh.
from the other hand, emulsifiers are naturally present in all types of foods including vegetables, fruits, sea foods from previously died animals and human sources that biodegraded and mixed with soil and later on plants absorbing and making food to you to eat. hhh

Only Muslim scholars are qualified to give judgement on such Fiqah. Almost all scholars agree that all type of food ingredients derived from Pork is Haram.
As for emulsifier, if it is derived from vegetable source, then no problem to consume for Muslims.
